Mbombela United is a community club based in the Mpumalanga capital city of Mbombela.
The club prides itself on recruiting players only from the local community and has a very young squad of players who are competing in the Nedbank Cup for the first time.
Owned by the Matsebula brothers, Oupa and Sikhumbuzo, who are successful local businessmen, the club was formed in 2009 when they purchased the status of Mpumalanga SAFA Second Division side Manchester United, renaming the club Mbombela United.
The brothers have certainly brought their business acumen to the club, which has a thriving social media presence and even its own monthly magazine!
The club are currently coached by Lesego Matsomela and finished second in the Mpumalanga SAFA Second Division last season, just behind winners Batau FC.
Former Orlando Pirates development player Bednog Manyike, ex-Bay United centre-back Nhlanhla Mzabane and, former Winners Park and Baroka FC player Mfanimpela Maseko are three of their more notable names.
“The Nedbank Cup will give us the springboard to showcase our talent as a team and our professionalism as a club,” says co-owner Sikhumbuzo Matsebula. “It is an opportunity for us to market ourselves, but also the city and the Mbombela Stadium if we get to play a home match there.
“It is a big opportunity to solidify our brand not just in the minds of the people of Mpumalanga, but also nationally, which is where our ambitions lie.”
Matsebula says the club enjoys terrific local support and says it is a sign of the passion for football in the province.
“We have a very strong following for our SAFA Second Division matches and that shows that people in the region are not interested only in the professional teams, but that they also follow community football.”
Mbombela United play their home games at the KaNyamazane Stadium and go by the nickname of Tingwenyama.
